Sunday Samples 344

September 8, 2013

And finally, I’m also reminded of the 1943 ditty “Mairzy Doats”, as popularized in 1944 by the Merry Macs. I may have run into this before, but my most memorable association is during the madness of Leland Palmer in Twin Peaks. Since I never saw the lyrics, I never quite got it; it might help to read them first.

I know a ditty nutty as a fruitcake
Goofy as a goon [and silly as a loon
Some call it pretty;] others call it crazy
But they all sing this tune:

Mairzy doats and dozy doats and liddle lamzy divey
A kiddley divey too, wouldn’t you?
Mairzy doats and dozy doats and liddle lamzy divey
A kiddley divey too, wouldn’t you?

If the words sound queer and funny to your ear
A little bit jumbled and jivey
Sing “Mares eat oats and does eat oats
And little lambs eat ivy”

Oh! Mairzy doats and dozy doats and liddle lamzy divey
A kiddley divey too, wouldn’t you-oo?
A kiddley divey too, wouldn’t you?

Mairzy [doats and dozy] doats and liddle [lamzy divey]
A kiddley [divey too,] wouldn’t you?
Mairzy [doats and dozy] doats and liddle [lamzy divey]
A kiddley [divey too,] wouldn’t you?

If the words sound queer; funny to your ear
A little bit mumbled and tumbled and jumbled and jivey
Sing “Mares eat oats; does eat oats
Little lambs eat ivy”

Mairzy [doats and dozy] doats and liddle [lamzy divey]
A kiddley [divey too,] wouldn’t you-oo?
A kiddley divey too, wouldn’t you?

Oh! Mairzy doats and dozy doats and liddle lamzy divey
A kiddley divey too, wouldn’t you-oo?
A kiddley divey too, wouldn’t you-oo?
A kiddley divey too, wouldn’t you-oo?
A kiddley divey too, wouldn’t you?

[A kiddley divey kiddley divey too,] wouldn’t you?
